Friends Projects 2005

Our board of directors met with Superintendent Darrell Cook on January 26, 2005 to discuss projects we’ll support at the battlefield for 2005. 

We pledged $5,000 to be used at Mr. Cook’s discretion. We may need to go over that amount depending on what other projects may occur. Two major projects we’re looking at are: 

New Warrior Markers

Three new warrior markers for the Suicide Boys who fell near the end of the battle will be placed near Deep Ravine Trail. These Cheyenne warriors were Limber Bones, Cut Belly, and Closed Hand. Another marker for Little Whirl Wind will be placed at Reno-Benteen. Little Whirl Wind was killed fighting the Arikara scouts during the Valley Fight.

These markers have been a long-time project of Friends V.P. Clifford Long Sioux and I’m happy that he will finally see them come to be. I also believe these markers are important because of visibility. Out of the five warrior markers placed, only one is easily seen beside a trial – Long Road’s marker at Reno-Benteen. These new markers will be seen from the visitor center and up close along the trial.

New Web Cams

We are in the process of replacing the current webcam (which doesn't work most of the time) with two new cams; one will scan Last Stand Hill including the 7th Cavalry Monument and the Indian Memorial, the other will scan Deep Ravine Trail and portions of the Custer National Cemetery. As of this writing, May 2005, we don't have a date when these will be online. But, please stay tuned. On July 2, 2005 the LBHA board voted to partner with the Friends through a generous donation to install the webcams.
